As a heads up: earlier this week I attended a panel discussion at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York and I was interested to learn that the idea whereby the US would get access to rare earth minerals in Ukraine was first posited ….by Ukraine. According to Stefan Stestanovich, a former US government official and Russia expert, Ukraine came up with this last year, in case Trump won the election. They understood the transactional bent of the leader they’d be dealing with.

However, of course Ukraine expected that for their “quid” there would be a “pro” in some sort of security guarantee…

And that’s the part that, so far, seems to be missing.
