This week’s guest is New York lawyer Richard E. Farley, “Rich” to his friends, who has just published his third book, Drop Dead with possibly the longest subtitle in recent memory (see above).

Farley, a leveraged buy-out expert at Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel, was reportedly among the top contenders for the SEC chair position earlier this year.

His latest topic is fascinating: namely the story of New York’s nadir and recovery in the 1970s.

It’s a tale in which certain members of the city’s ruling class blamed President Ford for abandoning the city, and cast themselves as the heroes who came to the rescue - at least that’s the story I always heard when I moved to New York in the late 1990s.

But Rich argues that isn’t quite true. In fact, this bunch were also responsible for its problems - but not, Rich, argues, alone.
