A small but important aside, especially for all my readers who remain understandably puzzled over the enigma of Jeffrey Epstein’s life and death: a news story that broke during my Covid brain-fog that was both personal and sad about a strange business associate of Epstein’s whom I knew well—but whom I understood not at all.

Steven J. Hoffenberg, who was convicted of running the biggest Ponzi scheme in American history prior to Bernie Madoff, was found dead at 77 in a humdrum apartment in Derby, Connecticut in late August. According to reports, his body had lain on the floor for almost a week before a concerned friend called the police. Incredible to think that, thirty years earlier, this man was a self-made mogul from Brooklyn who had almost bought the New York Post.
